The Local Advisory Group met on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Theater for the Performing Arts at Governors State University. A facilitator led the meeting to obtain input from the Local Advisory Group members on ground transportation, airport facilities, and key concerns for the Inaugural Airport. The Local Advisory Group was randomly divided into 4 tables in addition to one public table. Each group was given maps and markers to graphically depict their ideas on the proposed Inaugural Airport. At the conclusion of the exercise, each table was given the opportunity to present their best ideas to the entire group. The Local Advisory Group members were then immediately polled on their reaction to these ideas.
Some of the common themes expressed by the different groups included:
Transportation
- East-West Access (both on-airport and on a regional level)
- Intermodal Connections (air, rail, highway)
- Rail access to airport through proposed extension of Metra services
Facilities
- Green Orientation – protect open spaces around key drainage features as well as on the airport site, and create “Green Terminals” using solar and other new technologies
- Parking, shuttle, and rail combo for easy access
Key Concerns
- Need regional planning around the airport, local planning authority, and shared stormwater district
- Self-sufficient emergency services at the airport
